Drawing is not just for pencils and paper anymore. Though the concept of digital drawing and digital painting has been around since the early days of the telephone, using electronic tablets have become a popular way for graphic designers, professional drafters, or anyone with an artistic flair to easily transfer their ideas directly to their computer screen without losing resolution or color quality.
The original idea for transmitting handwriting to paper using the aid of a machine was fashioned in 1888 by Elisha Gray, an American inventor who dubbed his invention the teleautograph. It became widely used around the world for obtaining necessary signatures, such as those from doctors or bankers, who were not immediately available in person. Later incarnations of the teleautograph, introduced in the 1950′s and 1960′s, were most often used for handwriting recognition and graphics conversion. The first at-home digital drawing device appeared in 1984. Called the KoalaPad, it was originally designed to work with the Apple II computer but was eventually made to be compatible with any home computer of that era.
Today, pressing a pen-shaped stylus or a small puck (similar to a mouse) to the surface of the tablet transmits the image the user sketches or traces to a computer through digital drawing software such as the Adobe suite of graphic design programs. This is considered to be the most natural and efficient way of achieving the proper dimensions and opacity for computer graphics. Even photographers take advantage of the efficiency that digital drawing provides when post-processing their photos. In East Asian countries, graphics tablets are often used to communicate via computer, as typing on a keyboard is not as conducive to the handwriting styles there.
Those without access to digital drawing devices may try their hand at digital art by using websites designed with built-in applications for drawing online. Though not as sophisticated as a tablet and stylus or puck, a user can navigate his or her mouse across the designated “paper” on the screen to create an image of their choosing. The color, brush size and shape can all be modified as well.
